Embrace the Winter Hustle: Staying Active and Energized During Holiday Weeks
Here we are, just a week from Thanksgiving (when this is published). As we dive into the holiday season (or are we already there?), it’s easy to let our fitness routines take a back seat to make room for holiday gatherings, preparing for the holidays, and even getting cozy and being on the border of hibernating.
But here is the thing: you don’t need to press pause on your health and fitness journey just because winter has settled in and there is less daylight. This time of year is the perfect time to embrace the winter hustle, keep things going and flowing (and minimize stress in the process).
And I want to debunk the myth that we must “burn off” holiday calories or “earn” our favorite holiday treats. Instead, focus on maintaining our usual fitness routine no matter what the schedule or calendar brings.
1. Winter-Proof Your Fitness Routine:
Sure, the sun may set a bit earlier, but that doesn’t mean to pack away the sneakers. If you’re used to outdoor workouts, consider shifting your routine to earlier or exploring indoor alternatives. A brisk morning walk not only wakes your body but also invigorates your mind, preparing you for the day ahead. I think of it as my morning “meditation.”
Alternatively, try a heart-pounding home workout that requires minimal equipment – think jumping jacks, squats, and lunges (look up bodyweight workouts). And if you’re feeling adventurous, turn your home into a dance studio for a lively and calorie-burning session.
2. Embrace the Festive Spirit in Your Workouts:
Who says workouts can’t be festive? Create your Holiday Playlist and get the heart rate up with cardio or stretch and relax, depending on how your playlist goes. Trust me, lunges are way more fun when accompanied by “Jingle Bell Rock” or The Kinks “Father Christmas.” This simple adjustment can make your workouts more enjoyable and ensure you stay in the holiday spirit.
3. Redefine Your Relationship with Holiday Calories:
Let’s ditch the notion that we must “burn off” every holiday calorie. Instead, focus on the joy of the season, the time spent with loved ones, and the seasonal foods. Food is integral to our celebrations, and enjoying your favorite treats without feeling guilty is okay. It’s all about balance and savoring those special moments, not sweating it out in the gym to “undo” a festive meal (even if your group fitness instructor or others in the class think or say this).
Practice mindful eating by savoring each bite, appreciating the flavors, and paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. By doing so, you’ll find that you can enjoy holiday treats without overindulging and maintain a healthy and balanced approach to nutrition.
4. Make Movement a Family (or Group) Affair:
The holidays are about family, so why not make fitness a family affair? Plan activities that get everyone moving, like a scavenger hunt or a post-feast stroll through the neighborhood to admire the holiday lights. Not only does this keep you active, but it also creates cherished memories with your loved ones. Consider organizing a family workout challenge where each member chooses a fun exercise. A “challenge” ensures everyone stays active and fosters a supportive and healthy family dynamic during the holiday season. And, if you meet resistance, let it go and do your thing.
5. Set Realistic Goals for Winter Wellness:
Instead of waiting for the calendar to flip to January 1st, why not set realistic fitness goals for the winter weeks? It could be as simple as committing to a specific number of weekly workouts (or cumulative minutes) or trying a new winter sport. Setting achievable goals keeps you motivated and ensures that your health and well-being remain a priority, even amid the holiday hustle.
Consider creating a winter wellness calendar that outlines your fitness plan, allowing you to track your progress and stay accountable visually. This proactive approach helps you stay on track and reinforces that health is a continuous journey, not just a New Year’s resolution.
6. Find Joy in the Process:
Above all, find joy in the process of staying active. Whether it’s a solo workout that leaves you feeling invigorated or a family dance party that has everyone laughing, relish the moments of movement. Exercise isn’t just about physical health; it’s a celebration of what our bodies can do and an investment in our overall well-being. Take the time to acknowledge and appreciate the positive impact of staying active on your mood, energy levels, and general outlook. By focusing on the joy of movement, you’ll find that staying active during the winter and holiday weeks becomes not just a routine but a source of happiness and vitality.
Staying active can help you with stress management. While it may be another “thing” on your to-do list, you could see it as “me time” and a way to purge some of the stresses of the holiday season.
Make a pact to stay active, energized, and connected to our well-being throughout the winter and holiday weeks. Remember, there’s no need to wait for a new year to prioritize your health. Embrace the winter hustle, enjoy the festivities, and keep moving to make this season your healthiest and happiest yet!
