World Women’s Wellness Day

Welcome to World Women’s Wellness Day (the last Friday in April annually).

In 2023 World Women’s Wellness Day’s theme is to empower women to take charge of their health and well-being.

Isn’t everyday women’s wellness day? In theory, we should all focus on our wellness daily; however, you know this is not how it works.

Women often put their health and wellness in second or third place after the wellness of those in their life, including their children, spouses, and parents.

It is considered selfish if a woman stops caring for those around her.

It is okay to engage in self-care.

I know many women are attempting to take care of their wellness, including their mental health, and NOT stopping their life to help their families. These women traditionally (and often still) will stop their work, stop what they are doing immediately, to help their child or another family member who is in need.

I am not talking about a small child, but an adult child who has resources to take care of things but knows they can call mom for help, and she will drop what she is doing to help, calling mom for a ride when they have the ride-share app and the money to use it? Because mom usually would go out of her way to give a ride.

A friend who always made her competent child a hot breakfast daily realized she needed to reduce her stress and told her child he could have cereal for breakfast. He was stunned and could not believe his mom would not make him breakfast. Does it matter whether she was a work-from-home parent or not? She wasn’t. She realized she was doing him a disservice by making breakfast for him and rendering him incapable of preparing a meal himself.

What is Wellness?

There are several components of wellness, including physical, emotional, and mental health and more.

Prioritize these components by doing the following things:

Eat Well: Get your fruits, vegetables, whole grains, balanced protein, and healthy fats while limiting solid fats, added sugars, excess sodium, and alcohol.

Move: Get regular exercise. It helps with stress management, improves self-esteem, and helps reduce the risk of heart disease, including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Include stretching, strength, and cardiovascular exercise weekly.

Get Checked: if you haven’t had your check-up in the past year (or 3-5 years), schedule them. Include the screenings, too – your healthcare providers can get you up to speed on those screenings based on your age, which may include breast cancer screenings (mammograms), cervical cancer screenings, colon cancer screenings, and skin cancer screenings.

Don’t forget your emotional and mental health. Do you have friends you can confide in? A way to manage stress? Confidence in seeking therapy if you need it? Even a place for a time out, such as getting a massage or facial? Are you sleeping well, or are you having difficulty with this?

Address things now before it is too late. And your kids won’t starve or be stranded – they can figure these out.
