Exploring Occupational Wellness: Finding Fulfillment in Work and Life

Exploring Occupational Wellness: Finding Fulfillment in Work and Life

Occupational wellness, or finding satisfaction in what you do for work, is an integral part of overall well-being. It's not just about having a job you like; it's also about balancing work with other parts of your life and knowing when to say "no" to keep that balance.

Even if you're not working anymore, thinking about how you spend your time and finding fulfillment in your activities is still essential.

When we talk about occupational wellness, we're asking questions like:

  • Do you enjoy what you do?

  • Does your work give you a sense of satisfaction and challenge?

  • Are there opportunities for growth and learning in your job or career?

Sometimes, people find themselves in jobs that used to make them happy but don't anymore. Or they realize their career isn't what they want it to be. In those cases, it might be worth considering a change. That can be scary, especially if it means returning to school or starting something new later in life.

But thinking about what will make you happy and fulfilled in the long run is essential.

Let's look at a story from the past to help illustrate this point. In a letter to Dear Abby from 2000, a person wrote about their dream of becoming a doctor. Even though they had a good job, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were meant to do something else. But going back to school to pursue medicine would take seven years.

Abby's response was simple but powerful: "And how old will you be in seven years if you don't go to medical school?"

This reminds us that time passes quickly, and there is always time to pursue our dreams.

As we move forward, let's consider occupational wellness a journey of self-discovery and growth. Whether sticking with your current job or exploring new possibilities, remember that fulfillment comes from following your passions and finding a balance that works for you.
