You Can Eat What You Want

What do you think when I say you can EAT WHAT YOU WANT?

Some people have some automatic and negative thoughts about this.  

Regarding food and our behaviors around food, we need to stop thinking in black and white.  

These are words frequently used about food – in my experiences with clients:  

  • Good or bad.

  • Right or wrong.

  • All or nothing.

  • Cheating.

  • Slipping.

  • I can’t.

  • I shouldn’t.

  • Never.

  • Failure.

Here is a fact: one food, one meal, or even one day of eating will not turn our health for the better or the worse. But the consistency of that food, meal, or day over and over. 

Consider this: if you have French fries today, what will happen? What exactly will change in your overall health status?

And no, it does not depend on where they came from, you made them, or even what oil was used or if they were baked.

What will happen? Nothing.

I hear this all the time: that food isn’t good for you. Not really.

This one thing once in a while will not change your overall health.

Just because I am having a milkshake doesn’t mean anything other than having a milkshake if this is something I do occasionally – big deal! 

Just because you eat French fries – that won’t do a thing. If you have French fries every single day? Maybe that will have an impact. LARGE fries with extra salt? More of an impact.

But those fries once in a while won’t do it.

The chronic habit of repeatedly eating certain types of food will increase our risk of disease or poor health.

There is nothing wrong with eating pizza, fries, or having a coffee and doughnut occasionally. It is no big deal. Every day? Another story. 

So, remove the black-and-white thinking – because one food or one instance of eating it will not likely harm your health immediately unless you have an allergy or severe sensitivity. 

I get frustrated when people feel they must change their eating due to guilt or fear.

Instead, I encourage people to create new habits to feel good and great. And reduce their risk of long-term health issues. Truly ENJOY food. 

These ideas lead to me addressing the misinformation constantly coming at us.

But unfortunately, there are so many more avenues of getting information and misinformation today than ever before. And this is especially true when it comes to nutrition. 

The media doesn’t always report things accurately – social media implies that what will work for one person will work for you.

So, for example, people (or a company) are selling you something that will help you lose 10 pounds this month, but what about next month? 

I encourage people to see through the hype and recognize that much misinformation is coming at us and that one size does not fit all. Not even close. 

I want to help people choose health and eat instead of dieting. 

Stop being distracted by what appears to be the next “best” thing – the “squirrel” mentality.

Like the dog in the movie “Up,” who is easily distracted when a squirrel runs by, so many people are easily distracted by the latest diet trend.

There is so much chatter about how great the diet is – whatever diet is trending or popular right now. Or any of the dozens from the past – what happened to them?  

Unfortunately, most people don’t chatter about how it wasn’t sustainable or they didn’t feel awesome.

People will often ask me to help them lose weight quickly or help them follow the latest diet trend.

I ask in response, “Do you want to lose weight again, or for good”?

Most of the time, they say for good.

However, sometimes they say both – which isn’t as easy to obtain. 

You CAN be healthier and change weight without dieting!

It is possible, and it happens more often than people know. It just isn’t as catchy on social media. 

Eat WHAT you WANT – and remember that this doesn’t mean eating ALL you want or AS MUCH as you want. Moderation still matters 

You can eat what you want without having the word FAILED follow you.
